Mapleton National Park
Mapleton National Park is located in the Blackall Range.
Rich basalt soils, a result of volcanic activity around 30 million years ago, support warm subtropical rainforest. While much of the tall open forests grow on poorer quality rhyolitic soils derived from a violent volcanic period that began 235 million years ago.
Formerly known as Mapleton Forest Reserve, it includes rainforest remnants with bunya pines, piccabeen palm groves, tall open blackbutt forests and picturesque mountain scenery.
On the edge of the escarpment, waterfalls cascade all year round—thundering and spectacular during the summer rainfall season, then dropping to a gentle trickle in drier winter months.
Mapleton Falls, Kondalilla and Mapleton National Parks and other small reserves, protect the Blackall Range’s remnant forest communities and provide essential wildlife habitat.
The day use area is approximately 2.5 km from Mapleton along Mapleton Forest Road which has stands of magnificent blackbutt trees.
There is a myriad of walking tracks throughout the two National Parks adjacent to Mapleton. The Sunshine Coast Great Walk is an adventure, and maps can be obtained via the link below.
Mapleton Falls National Park
The park marks the point just west of Mapleton where Pencil Creek cascades 120 metres over an escarpment. This small, day-use-only park, shelters many bird species, including the peregrine falcon, eastern whipbird and wompoo fruit-dove. From the carpark, there is a short walk to Mapleton Falls lookout with wheelchair access to toilet and lookout. The panoramic view takes in the waterfall and Obi Obi Valley. From the open, grassy picnic area, the Wompoo circuit winds through eucalypts and rainforest where visitors may hear the fruit-dove’s booming calls, wallock-a-woo and book-a-roo. Near the causeway, frogs may be heard and distinctive hexagonal volcanic rocks seen.
Mapleton Lilyponds Park
The Lilyponds area was for many years a swamp and underwent an $800 000 makeover to turn it into a community park. There are free barbecues, a children’s play park, exercise station and covered seating areas. Plenty of space to run and play. The Sunshine Coast Council installed an off-leash dog area here in 2022. Walk quietly along the pathway which encircles the ponds and you will see why the place is a favourite for birdwatchers. Look carefully and you will see the native waterlily, Water Snowflake, Nymphoides Indica.
