Mapleton History Group

Mon 24th June. 5:30pm – 7:30pm. The Green Room, the Mapleton Public House. The bar will be open for the purchase of drinks. Light snacks will be provided. A gold coin donation is appreciated.

The Mapleton History Group meets as a sub-group of Talking Country – Building Bridges which was formed with the aim of helping to provide a
deeper understanding of Australian history and culture. A talk and discussion is based on selected readings about both positive and negative interactions between settlers and First Nations people. 

The topic of our next meeting is Deep Time. Archeologist Fiona McGill will guide us on a journey through the 65,000 years of the pre-history of this Country to help us understand our First Nations deep connection to land, water, skies and seas, and the wealth of knowledge that we can share.

Maleny Arts Council: Puccini’s Women

Sun 30th Jun. Maleny Community Centre, 2.00pm. This one-woman-show is a hot-blooded hybrid of drama and operatic recital. It paints the lust, romance, jealousy and passion of Puccini’s real-life love affairs and dramatically links his real-life women with the infamous “suffering heroines” portrayed in his opera masterpieces. Don’t miss soprano Vanessa West singing nine of the most beautiful arias ever composed, accompanied by Associate Artist Grant. Production styling thanks to ‘ByCeline’. NAIDOC Week

Sun Jul 7th to Sun 14th Jul, 2024! This nationwide celebration recognizes the rich history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2024 theme, “Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud,” emphasizes the enduring strength and unity of First Nations cultures. Fire symbolizes their connection to the land, their communities, and the traditions that define them. It’s a week to learn, celebrate, and stand in solidarity with Indigenous Australians.

Maleny Arts Council: Piers Lane performs Chopin’s Nocturns

Fri 19th Jul. Wuthering Heights of Mapleton

Sun 28th July 2024. Lilyponds, Mapleton. The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever is a fun and inclusive event that celebrates Kate Bush’s music while raising money for charity. The event is run by volunteers on a non-profit or for-charity basis and takes place annually in various cities worldwide. The event is open to everyone and is a great way to bring people together to celebrate music and raise money for a good cause.

National Tree Day

Sun 28th July 2024. Established in 1996, Planet Ark’s National Tree Day has grown into Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care event. The program is a call to action for all Australians to get their hands dirty and give back to their community.

Each year, around 300,000 people volunteer their time to engage in environmental activities that educate Australians about the world around them. While every day can be Tree Day, we dedicate celebration of Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day to the last Friday and last Sunday in July.

Bird Survey – Citizen Science

Mon 21st Sep. 7.30am (for approx 90mins) at the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Come on a rainforest walk with a purpose! Bird enthusiast Rob Kernot facilitates the early morning seasonal bird surveys. This repeated citizen science event is an opportunity to contribute to an understanding of what birds frequent the reserve at different times of the year.

Blackall 100

Fri 19th Oct. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, starting in Mapleton, this is a trail ultra-marathon that traverses the beautiful and scenic Great Walk of the Sunshine Coast. The event is open to runners and walkers with distances of 100 kilometres and 50 kilometres.

Day for Daniel

Fri 25th Oct. Join us in commemorating the annual Day for Daniel, held on the last Friday of October, as we pay tribute to the memory of Daniel Morcombe.

On this significant day, we invite all community members to unite by wearing red, educating themselves and others, and making a difference through donations. It’s a day dedicated to fostering conversations about personal safety between parents, caregivers, and educators with children and young people.

Remembrance Day – Lest we forget

Mon 11th Nov. Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day, is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states and other countries to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. 

Rembrance Day is observed on 11 November, commemorating the armistice signed on that day in 1918. Evolving from Armistice Day, initially observed at Buckingham Palace in 1919, Remembrance Day gained prominence during the Second World War, leading to its adoption by the Commonwealth nations, while the United States chose to observe Veterans Day.

Sculpture on the Edge
